Janice “Jan” Marie Woods, age 76, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2023. She left the world surrounded by her loving family in Butte.
Jan was born on September 14, 1947, in Butte, MT to Charles and Martha (Marcinkowski) Day. She was raised in Butte and graduated from Butte Central High School in 1965. Jan and Robert (Bob) Woods began dating in high school and were married on December 19, 1965. Together, they moved to Florida and lived there for a short time while Bob was in the Navy. Later, they returned to Montana and called it home for years until moving to Pocatello, ID in 1996.
Jan worked in various jobs throughout her life, her last was a bookkeeper at the Montana Power Company. She retired early but had always found pleasure in hobbies that included crocheting, stamping it up, scrap booking, and involvement with the Council of Catholic Women. Jan had a strong religious conviction where her faith never wavered. You could always count on her to have something witty to say, but never cursed; instead, she would say, “Oh, Sugar”. She was proud that she was able to pass her wittiness to her boys; when the boys got after one another she had a secret grin and knew that “she did that”. Jan enjoyed camping and fishing with her family but could find joy in anything as long Bob was with her. Our family finds peace in knowing that Jan and Bob are back together in matching recliners and flannel jackets, celebrating her birthday and the greatest reunion heaven has ever held.
Jan was preceded in death by her husband, son Shane Woods, her mother and father; her mother and fathers–in-law, Margaret and Harry Woods and Courtland Grice, her sisters-in-law, Peggy Varner and Carol Woods, and her brothers-in-law, Woody Slagle and Manuel Madrid.
Survived by her children, Bob (Margie) Woods of Butte, Clint (Terri) Woods of Gaylord, Michigan, and Travis (Lana) Woods of Anchorage, Alaska; her grandchildren, Zach, Mason, Paige, Cierra, Mike, Evan, Austin, and Nash Woods; great grandchildren, Ryan Ferriter, Bennett, and Emma Woods; as well as numerous nieces and nephews who were very dear to her. She is also survived by her sisters, Cathy Day and Geri (Erland) Gendreu; Sister-in-law’s, Betty Slagle (Jim Hopper), Karen (Ralph Sanchelli) Niland, Janet Madrid, Terri (Dee’O) Whitehead; brother-in-law, Rich Varner; and her special niece Misty Bitter.
A very special “thank you” to Shawna Yates and staff at The Springs at Butte for their compassionate care of Janice over the years, and to the staff of Honeybee Hospice for providing the highest quality care at the end of Jan’s life.

Janice was in my thoughts everyday. We had the best times at our CCW Meetings. Her daily Rosary got me doing it. I have missed her daily and missed my friend going to mass together. My mom was from Butte. So, yes, I can see them up there in heaven, with the biggest smile on her face because she is the with Bob and they are all celebrating. Prayers for you and your family.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Both Janice & I dated & married Bob & Ridge who were best friends. We met them on the night of the Butte Central – Butte High School game in 1963. We were always busy with these two hanging around Girl Central HighSchool as they went to Butte Hugh School.. Many memories of good times spent together. I married Rodge in August 1965 who served in the Navy until he retired in 1986 he served for 22 + years.

Janice and I were classmates at St. Lawrence O’Toole Grade School in Walkerville. After grade school I attended Boys’ Central High School and she attended Girls’ Central High School. In those days the high schools were split. We graduated in 1965. I fondly remember growing up with Janice in Walkerville and Centerville. In April of this year I visited with her in Butte at the Springs. She seemed to recognize me and we had a good visit. That was a pleasant day bringing back many memories for me. I extend my profound sympathy to Janice’s family and pray that you may be sustained and comforted by their many special memories of her. Peace, Mike Salvagni
