Local living legend, Michael Lee Glenn passed away in his home on March 30, 2023 after a brief battle with cancer. “Norml Mike” was a true son of Butte. He was born here on May 26, 1949 and lived most of his life here. He was a child of the 60’s and embraced the hippie spirit in his younger years. He traveled the country and met his first wife, Myrna Moon, while hitchhiking to New Orleans in 1971. They had two children, Kiomi Sunshine and Jeremy John. They separated not long after and he met his second wife, Janice Gilbreath. The two of them were officially married in 1991 and had been together for 45 years at the time of his death.
Mike ran his own hand-power demolition company and took down 72 large brick buildings in and around Butte, salvaging the materials to be used in other buildings. He was also a successful “entrepreneur” (and anyone who really knew Mike knows what that means!) who did well enough to buy and maintain several Butte rental properties.
Mike loved to camp with his wife and dogs. He also loved going on cruises and gambling trips to Las Vegas, hitting music festivals like Rockin’ the Rivers, playing pool, and spending time with his many grandkids. A great humorist, he had committed over a thousand jokes to memory. As one of the founding members of the Montana chapter of NORML, Mike was a great proponent for the legalization of marijuana, which he was happy to see largely achieved in his lifetime.
He will be remembered for his quick wit and generous heart. He is preceded in death by his mother, Sylvia “Sally” Herman and his father, Herbert Glenn, who died in the Mountain Con mine when Mike was way too young.
Mike is survived by his wife, Janice; his siblings: Donna, Frank (wife Sherry), and Mark (wife Rebecca); his children: Kiomi (husband Michael), Tammy, and Naga (formerly Jeremy); his step-daughters: Shawna and Robin (husband James); his grandchildren: Robert, Adam, Tyrell, Charisma, Uriah, Hannah, and Kyler; his great-grandchildren: Justin, Jozlynn, Uriah Jr., Emma, Samara, Austin, Evangeline, Stetson, Alicia, Grant, Hailey, and Mason, and his beloved dogs, Buster and Toby.
A celebration of his life will be held from 12-4pm on Friday, May 26, 2023, at the McQueen Athletic Club, 3250 Hecla St. in Butte. Eulogy and special music will begin at 1pm at the club. Please visit below to offer the family a condolence or to share a memory of Mike.
