It is with our deepest sadness and regret that we announce the passing of our dear mother Margaret Lucille Powell-Liedle on January 5, 2024. Margaret also better known as Marge or Maggie was born south of Chinook Mt. on 7-17-1930. She and her 12 siblings were raised in a tiny 2-bedroom house on a big ranch in Cow creek. Starting from an early age Marge learned how to hold her own. She and her siblings had to walk 2 miles just for school, explaining that she only had to kill 2 or 3 rattlesnakes along the way. Her highest education was the 8th grade, and she was very proud of that.
Some of her passions were fishing, playing cards, music and cooking for her family. One of her fondest memories was her dad teaching her to play the fiddle at the early age of 3. Music was her passion. While growing up she learned to play many different instruments but always seemed to favor the guitar and the fiddle. She was so very talented, and it brought her so much joy to play and sing her music. She was an avid member of the Montana fiddler’s association and remained until her passing.
She met the love of her life Douglas Liedle around 1942. They had 2 beautiful children together, Lia Dianne (1953) and David Douglas (1958). Shortly after the children were born, they uprooted from the Chinook Havre area and moved to Corvallis, MT. They ended up buying a couple different establishments in Corvallis, The Happy Hour bar and the Corvallis Tavern. These places are where they spent many of their years forming lifelong bonds and friendships. After selling the tavern in 1977, they traveled the northwest a bit as Douglas worked in construction. In 2002 they finally moved back to Anaconda and purchased their final home. Being retired, they both had many hobbies, but music always being the favorite. Marge ended up joining a blue grass band and they would travel all over and play their music at different establishments. Doug even joined at learned to play the base at the early age of 90! Marge and Doug were able to spend 71 wonderful years together before his passing in 2019.
Marge was also quite the cook! Holidays were her favorite; she couldn’t wait to see the smiling faces of the grandkids enjoying her fresh baked goods. Us kids couldn’t wait for her homemade fresh bread, pies and treats! If you were ever lucky enough to be fed by her, you know that no one ever left hungry, especially on sourdough pancake and licdab days!
She was proceeded in death by her parents, Lucille and Jacob Powell; her sisters, Alda, Cora, Verta, Lola, Joan; and brothers, Ben, Orville and William. Also proceeded in death by her husband Douglas (2019), and her 2 grandsons Douglas Garland (2012) and Jacob Liedle (2021).
She is survived by her siblings, Ted Powell, Louella Browning and Avis Groseclose; her 2 children Lia Liedle-Opp (Geno), and David (Michelle) Liedle; grandkids: Shawna Garland, Miranda and Angelena Liedle; great-grand kids: Cody, McKayla, Madison, Alyssa, Carson, Krusis, Zaeh and Monroe; and great-great-grandkids, Fischer and Lottie.
Marge was a very special lady. To be loved by her was a true blessing and this world will never be the same without her beautiful soul. We were so very blessed to love her all these years. RIP my sweet grandma, until we meet again.
Friends and family please join us in celebrating her wonderful 94 years of life. Services will begin with a 9:30 A.M. visitation, followed by a 10:30 A.M. Funeral Mass on Thursday, January 16th, 2025, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 217 W Pennsylvania Ave., Anaconda, MT 59711. Private burial and Reception to follow.
