Byron Emmett Mazurek was born on May 4, 1943 in Fort Worth, Texas. After attending Catholic schools, he attended college for a bit at TCU and then enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served a tour as an MP in Vietnam. When he returned from his service, Byron moved to Montana and attended Eastern Montana College. While attending EMC, he met the “catch of his life,” Susan “Sue” Gorie. Byron and Sue were married on September 5, 1970. Byron considered his family, including daughters, Denise and Colleen, his greatest accomplishment.
Throughout his life, Byron was an avid fisherman, fly tyer, golfer, and hunter. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially time spent gardening with Sue. Byron volunteered his time with the Jaycees, Racetrack Volunteer Fire Department, Habitat for Humanity, the Jefferson Watershed Council, and Trout Unlimited. Byron started his career as an insurance adjuster at Hugo Dobler in Helena. After moving to Butte in 1980, he continued in this profession at Montana Power Company where he “enjoyed helping people through trying times.” After retirement from the Power Company, Byron worked at the Highland View Golf Course. He was also an active member of St. Ann’s Parish and Cursillo. Byron cherished his faith.
Byron is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Sue; his brother David; his sisters Sonia and Nancy; his daughters and sons-in-law Denise & Jerry Jordan and Colleen & Chris McCowan; his grandchildren Rachael, Andrew, Ian & Shaina Jordan and Emmett & Carter McCowan; and his great-grandchildren Payne, Bailee, Evangeline, Kaelin, and Charles. He is also survived by his sisters- and brothers-in-law Skoge & Patty Mazurek; Dan, Paul, and Mary Gorie; and Annie and Jim Martin, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Byron & Jane; his bonus father Tom; his brothers Joe, Charles, and Bill; and his nephew Dillon.
